Biochemistry

OVERVIEW: Medical Biochemistry is one of the preclinical subjects mandated by the MCI. This department caters to 100 medical students, nursing students and students of the Allied Health Courses every year and is affiliated to the state health University- KUHS.

The teaching methods by the department are attuned to the need of the students abiding by the curriculum and utilizing current innovative teaching techniques. The teaching faculty are also engaged in research activities involving medical education and current clinical requirements. The faculty also encourage and guide medical students in various research projects.

The department has a well-equipped clinical laboratory which works round the clock and provides diagnostic assistance to the clinicians with routine and special tests done with fully automated state of the art equipment. It is linked to the hospital information system to provide online transfer of results without delay. The internal quality control is done daily on a routine basis and the laboratory partakes in the external quality control program thus maintaining high standards of precision and accuracy of results.

History: The college department was started in 2002 with Dr. Assuma Beevi as the founder head. She retired in 2007 and consequently the headship was taken up by Dr.Jeeji Palocaren.

The Clinical Biochemistry functioned as part of Central Clinical Laboratory since the inception of the hospital. Once the Medical college started in 2002 , it became an independent unit headed by Dr.Radhakrishnan R who was instrumental in introducing automation in the Biochemistry laboratory. Since 2007 it is headed by Dr.Jeeji Palocaren.
